Spirit of Hospitality

A Word From Our General Manager

Where are you initially from?

I'm from Lake Forest, so I've always been familiar with the Orange County area. My mom worked right off of PCH, I would spend my childhood summers in Dana Point, exploring Doheny State Beach.

What are new things you've learned about the Dana Point community after working here?

I love the walking distance to everything, the restaurants, scenic hikes and most importantly, the small community feel. Everyone knows everyone. It's a close knit community where we’re all connected in some way.

Can you tell us about your experience in the hotel industry?

I spent seven years with Marriott, starting with Residence Inn, moving to a Courtyard hotel, and then most recently, working front office of Marriott Irvine Spectrum. Without a doubt, my favorite brand to work in was Residence Inn. It reminds me of Dana Point Marina Inn because we have more repeat guests who we can see on a more frequent basis and get to know more personally.

What is the best guest comment you've ever received?

Back when I was at Residence Inn, we hosted a family who stayed with us while the son was going through cancer treatment. Knowing their situation, we tried to make them feel as much at home as possible throughout their stay. When the son was deemed cancer free, my team celebrated with and surprised them, decorating his suite with balloons, "Congratulations" signs, confetti and more. The mom wrote me a letter after they had checked out, expressing her gratitude for the experience my team had provided her and her family through the tough season of life. Our service and hospitality created a pleasant experience even in a bad situation and it was heartwarming to hear the positive impact from our touch of hospitality. We still keep in touch till this day!

When you're not at DPMI, where do you like to spend your weekends?

Most weekends are spent with my nephews and my three Boston Terriers. Our favorite place to go is the dog beach, where they’ll chase one another and run circles with all the energy they have. What's in store for the hotel? There are plenty of new delights for Dana Point Marina Inn. For one, we have recently converted to a pet friendly hotel! We're also revamping our breakfast, expanding the selections and bringing in hot food, and working on a number of property enhancements for you to enjoy.

Back In the Day

RH Dana Jr. the namesake of Dana Point, called the area “one of the most romantic spots in California”, when he sailed from Boston to California in the 1800’s as noted in his sea journal, “Two Years Before the Mast.” Dana Point back then was a port in the fur trade from local Mission San Juan Capistrano. You can visit a replica of RH Dana Jr’s merchant ship right here in Dana Point Harbor at The Ocean Institute, an ocean education center that offers in depth marine science, maritime history, and outdoor education. They host an annual Tallships Festival every September where ships like the Pilgrim sail into our harbor with canon battles, pirates, sailing, and even a hosted breakfast with Mermaids!! Most Sunday’s The Ocean Institute offers a Pilgrim open house to public where you can see crew dressed in costume, raise the sails, and guide you back in time.
